Ziegler Wax Embryo Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Three-dimensional anatomical models have long been essential to the learning of science and lend a sense of ?control? to those practicing in the field. As the development of embryology [4] grew in importance during the late 1800s, so did the need for models to show intricate details of embryos. Embryologists such as Wilhelm His [5], Ernst Haeckel [6], and Oscar Hertwig all initially constructed their own wax models of embryos but later handed over the modification and reproduction of their models to various ?plastic artists.? The most renowned among these artists was Adolf Ziegler [7].

Embryos in Wax: Models from the Ziegler Studio [6], is a history of embryo wax modeling written by science historian Nick Hopwood [5]. Published by the Whipple Museum of the History of Science University of Cambridge and the Institute of the History of Medicine University of Bern [7], 2002, the book, like the wax models, helps exemplify the visual and material culture of science. The first half...

Anatomical models have always been a mainstay of descriptive embryology [5]. As the training of embryologists grew in the late 1800s, so too did the need for large-scale teaching models. Embryo wax models, such as those made by Adolf Ziegler [6] and Gustav Born [7], were popular in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century as a way to visualize, in three dimensio...

Prenatal or antenatal development is a process during which the human embryo undergoes complex morphogenetic changes. To understand and characterize the dynamic events underlying human ontogenesis, it is useful to visualize embryonic structures in threedimensions (3D). Classically, solid reconstruction and fine drawing have been the primary approaches used to model the architecture of the embry...

anatomist. The project was so complex that Sabin spent seven weeks with Ziegler working on the models. It is clear from Sabin’s letters home that the process of modeling illuminated her understanding of the threedimensional of the brain. These, and almost all of the models were associated with publications in learned journals, lending scientific authority to what might have been considered mere...
